Let’s have a farm adventure in kindergarten - learning about hens, igniting creativity and practicing some essential fine motor skills for early writing. Spring is in the air, and it's time to bring the animals into the classroom! Drawing hens with colorful crayons is a fun and educational activity that will help kindergarteners learn about the farm and give you the opportunity to display some gorgeous happy artworks in your classroom.
Materials:
- Colorful crayons
- White paper
- Watercolors or other pains (I use watercolors a lot with little learners, not to necessarily teach watercolor technique but because the palette is ready-to-go and tidying up is quick and easy)
Instructions:
- Begin by reminding students how to hold a crayon correctly.
- Demonstrate how to draw a simple hen shape with a hop of 3 for each section (see my brief Instagram REEL).
- Students draw the body with 3 hops, then the comb with another 3 and finish with the body shape, adding 3 little hops for the tail feathers. Students can complete their hen with legs and additional detail of their choice.
- Provide a variety of shades of pink, yellow, purple, and blue crayons for the hens' bodies and other colors for a background and fun detail.
- Let students choose their favorite colors and experiment with different shades.
- Once students have drawn their hens, encourage them to add their own creative touches.
- They can add details like a bumblebee hovering over the hen or a chick peeking out from under its wing.
- to help guide you and your students I have a free page in the Pond Coloring Club today to print and draw on - find out more about the club HERE
Extension Ideas:
To extend the learning experience, you can ask students to:- Write a short story about their hen.
- Create a farm scene by adding other animals and elements to their drawings.
- Research different breeds of hens and share their findings with the class.
- Write a simple informative text about hens - see the sample below using a page from my print-and-go writing pack
Drawing hens with colorful crayons is a delightful activity that combines art, science, and creativity. It's a perfect way to engage kindergarteners in a fun and educational experience while introducing them to the wonders of the farm.
After the hens, you may like to encourage your students to write and draw about other animals on the farm. Set up a writing or drawing center as part of your learning centers or literacy activities. These drawings are from my Farm Directed Drawing pack and are ready to print and go!
