Watermelon Craft

Watermelons are crisp, cool and the largest fruit in the world. They’re a refreshing and hydrating snack on hot summer days and with their vibrant colors an ideal topic to explore in art and craft activities for young children.

Crafting with kids is a wonderful way to spend time together while also helping them learn and develop new skills. This watermelon paper craft is a great activity for exploring colors and practicing fine motor skills.

Materials:

Instructions:

  • Print the watermelon craft on thin card if possible - this will make it easier to work with.
  • Paint or color the watermelon with pink, red, green and black crayons or colors.
  • Cut out the watermelon shape and help your child with the slits using a craft tool.
  • Cut long strips of colored paper to weave through the slits.
  • Weave the paper strips through the slits on the watermelon - giving your child verbal support - in and out, under/over etc
  • Secure each paper strip with some glue on the reverse side of the watermelon.
  • Trim the slits to sit neatly with the watermelon shape.
  • Allow the glue to dry completely.
  • While waiting for the craft to draw your children can write a story or acrostic poem about watermelon.
