As a kindergarten teacher, you'll know that the early years are critical for developing a strong foundation in math. One way to help our students succeed is to make sure that numbers are on display in the classroom at all times.
A number display supports:
Number Sense
- it helps students to become familiar with the symbols that represent numbers, especially if the posters combine the numeral and a picture of the numbers in dots or objects
- number sense is the ability to understand the meaning and relationships of numbers
Learning to Count
- using the display each day for counting and supporting number activities will help students understand the concept of one-to-one correspondence, assigning a word with each symbol
Compare Numbers
- when students see numbers in a line, they can start to compare them to each other
- comparing numbers is important for developing the ability to order numbers and to understand the concept of greater than and less than
Finally, having numbers on display in kindergarten helps to create a print-rich environment. This type of environment is important for developing early literacy skills. When students are surrounded by print, they are more likely to become interested in reading and writing.
