7 Ladybugs! 🐞 A Simple Drawing Idea
For Day 18 of my Softly September Drawing Challenge, our spark word was SEVEN - so I drew seven ladybugs!
The idea started while I was looking through a sweet picture book I have, Ladybird by Bernadette Gervais. At the end, there's a page showing a ladybug with six spots and another with seven, and it got me thinking about all the different types of ladybugs there are.
And, as drawing ideas tend to do, one thought led to another!
I started playing with different ladybug shapes, spots and features and gave some of them long ladybug legs. 🐞
That immediately made me think of kindergarten literacy too - long ladybug legs would be such a fun little drawing idea when learning the L sound, hearing that beginning /l/ sound repeated, or noticing double-L words.

Draw SEVEN With Me ✏️
You don't need to be following the challenge in real time to join in. Pick up a pen or pencil and try one of these quick starts:- Draw seven circles and turn each into something different.
- Make seven short lines, then build a little scene around them.
- Draw seven flowers growing together.
- Scatter seven hearts across your page.
- Draw seven tiny creatures—all alike or completely different.
- Draw a 7 AM sunshine beginning a new day.
- Or draw seven ladybugs, experimenting with different shapes, spots, expressions and, of course, some very long ladybug legs!
Sometimes that's all you need to get a drawing started.
