Zig-Zags, Foxes, and Fun: A Simple Handwriting + Art Activity

Zig-Zag Line Practice for Little Writers

Looking for an easy way to build fine motor skills while keeping your students engaged? Try combining zig-zag line practice with a directed drawing project!

In this activity, students practice drawing zig-zag lines to strengthen handwriting skills, then use those same motions to help create an adorable fox. It’s a fun, purposeful way to connect writing practice with art.

You can follow the steps in my Fox Directed Drawing Pack on TPT to guide your students through drawing their own fox!

Step-by-Step Fox Directed Drawing

For added creativity, let students use crayons and watercolors like shown in the photos - or keep it simple by drawing in their writing journals.

After drawing, have students write a short sentence about their fox using decodable words. Here are three simple options:
  • Fox can run.
  • Fox is red.
  • Fox can hop.
To extend the activity, students can listen to a story featuring a fox or explore fun animal facts to learn even more.

It’s an easy, low-prep lesson that blends writing, art, and a little bit of science—perfect for keeping young learners engaged!
