To make the lesson even more meaningful and immersive, you could begin by exploring the fascinating scribbly gum tree and the winding marks often found across its bark. Students love noticing the natural “scribbles” and trying their own!
A fun art warm-up idea:
- Let students practice making scribbly lines with white crayon or oil pastel on paper
- Add a soft watercolor wash over the top to create beautiful textured background paper before drawing the koala
You could also add a few playful sensory and movement experiences throughout the lesson:
- Explore soft textures in the play corner or sensory area before looking closely at photos of koala fur
