Joyful Learning Through Math, Art and Play!

From Counting On to Confident Addition: A Simple Math Play Game

Math Play: Building Addition Fluency with Counting On

This quick Math Kit activity helps students move from early counting strategies toward more fluent addition thinking. By combining hands-on materials with a simple game structure, students practise counting on while also recording addition using the + and = symbols.

Students generate two numbers using the Double Trouble number mats and mark the chosen numbers with counters.

The activity uses the Addition Balance Cards together with the Double Trouble number mats to generate random addition problems in a playful way.

What Students Are Practising

  • counting on to find totals
  • recognising two addends in an addition problem
  • recording addition using + and = symbols
  • developing more efficient strategies for addition
Use the counting track to count on from the first number and find the total.

Materials

  • Addition Balance Cards (placed in a plastic sleeve or clear bag for dry-erase use)
  • Double Trouble number mats or number spinners/dice
  • counters
  • dry erase markers
  • play mat with a counting track

How to Play

  • Set up the recording mat
  • Place the Addition Balance Card inside a plastic sleeve, zip bag, or under a whiteboard sheet so students can write on it with a dry-erase marker.
  • Generate two numbers
  • Students choose two numbers using a Double Trouble number or dice.
  • Mark the chosen numbers
  • Place a counter on each chosen number on the Double Trouble mat to show it has been used.
  • Record the addition.
  • Write the number sentence on the Addition Balance card (for example 7 + 6 =).
  • Use the counting track if needed
  • Start at the first number and count on the second number using the play mat counting track.
  • Students can mark the counts along the track with a marker if they need support.
  • Find and record the total
  • Write the total to complete the equation.
  • Keep playing
Continue generating new number pairs and recording the additions. Leave counters on the numbers already used so students can see which numbers remain.
  • Finish the round
Play until all the numbers on the Double Trouble mat have been used, creating a set of random addition problems.

Record the addition equation on the Addition Balance card to connect hands-on play with formal math notation.

Why This Works

This simple activity helps students bridge from counting strategies to more mental addition. The counting track provides support when needed, while repeated play encourages students to begin recognising combinations and solving more efficiently.
