Today I'd love to share with you another two bonus ideas for using the game mats from 10 in the House for a different number game.
10 in the House is perfect for students who are learning addition strategies - finding combinations that total ten. But for the students not at this level, you could play a subitizing or numeral identification game.
Empty the House
- cover all the numerals or dots with counters
- players take turns to remove any two counters
- if the revealed squares match, they may keep the counters until the end of play
- encourage students to remember the position of numbers for the next turn - building visual memory
- the player with the most counters at the end of the game may be declared the winner
Count to Ten in the House
- ask students to take just one counter on their turn
- it must be a number 1 to start
- try for a 2, then a 3 and so on
- they must reveal numbers 1-10 in counting order, keeping counters as they go
- counters are returned to the mat if they do not fit the sequence
- the first to 10 counters may be declared the winner
I hope you love these 2 practical, hands-on ways to get more value and teaching opportunities from this resource!
