Addition Challenge

Here is an idea for challenging students in your class who are working beyond the game idea shared in our math activity: 10 in the House

Playing by the included instructions, students will find pairs of numbers that total 10 using the numeral or dot pattern game mats.

Challenge your best mathematicians in the class and encourage them to find the total of 4 numbers on the mat and record them in their math journal. Let's take a look:

math games

addition game

4 Squares

  • let students play in pairs or independently
  • provide them a game mat (numbers if using mental strategies confidently, dot patterns if they are not)
  • students place a counter down in the intersection of 4 squares
  • using these 4 squares, students create an addition and find the total

adding 4 digits

  • encourage mental addition strategies to find the total - like finding the tens, bridging to ten, using double facts etc
  • challenge your students to do 10 of these additions
  • ask them to tell you the strategies they used to find the total
