Rabbit Finger Play

Have you enjoyed the free printable finger plays I have offered you recently? I love making them and have created one for you today especially for spring or Easter - it's called Rabbit!

Rabbit FInger Play

We love finger plays in the early childhood classroom! They help you provide:
  • a short engaging text that students can participate actively in
  • a literacy experience - students can point or follow along with the text and demonstrate pre-reading skills
  • a language experience - students are exposed to topic vocabulary and rhyme
  • an integration of listening, language and literacy
  • a re-focus opportunity and a joint experience that will help build classroom community
  • fine motor and movement
  • a fun transition between longer lessons
This finger play is mostly focussed on rabbit's face and has simple actions that complement each part. It concludes with students rolling their hands in a ball and placing them snuggly in their lap - perfect for behavior management.

Bunny Finger Play

Project it onto your classroom electronic board to use it as a literacy or reading activity. As you collect more of our finger plays you can add them together in a folder and let your students read them in the classroom library.

A blackline version is included for you too. Have students color it and take it home to share with their families. This makes a great literacy link between home and school.

Equal Groups for Multiplication

After your learners have had plenty of practice making equal groups with objects and math manipulatives you can transition them to a more abstract understanding by having them draw equal groups to solve simple, early multiplication.

With our Flower Groups cards they will be drawing petals on the flowers in equal arrangements.

Fun Frog Number Game

Frog Race can be prepped for your math groups in minutes. The whole-page game mats require no cutting and if you have dice and counters nearby - you're good to go!

This game will help your students with counting, subitizing and numeral identification.

We designed it to include repetition (critical to the development of numeral identification and subitizing) within the very foundation of the game.

Over and over and over again students will attend to the dot patterns on the dice and match them to numerals. Building visual memory.

To play

  • pop a frog (counter) on each line
  • the frogs race to the lily pad - who will get tehir first?
  • move a matching frog one space along the track each time the number is thrown
  • let's race!

kindergarten number game
  • the first numbered frog to reach the end of the track and land on a lily pad is the winning frog
  • one student controls all frogs, on an their individual board

More ideas

Here are a few more ways you can use the boards - to get more value out of your time and resources!

Add counters

  • instead of moving a counter along the line, students place an additional counter in each space
  • as they 'keep track' of how many counters are on each track they will be informally building addition and subtraction skills

subitizing race game

Write the numbers

  • students write the numbers along the track as a number is rolled
  • the mats can also be used for direct practice of number writing without the dice rolling
fast prep math game

Play Dough Balls

  • students roll play dough balls (frogs) to match the numbers on the frogs
  • after lining up the numbers, ask students to roll the dice
  • as a number is rolled, students can squash the balls - making lily pads!

Happy Harmony Day Coloring Page

Harmony Day is celebrated on 21 March each year in Australia. It is a day to appreciate the cultural diversity within our society celebrate the fact that everyone belongs!

We think that the absolute best way to celebrate is to have children share about themselves and their families. By doing this you are not only valuing what each child brings to your classroom but you will build class community is a respectful way.

We have a new free coloring page over in our club for you today that you may like to incorporate into your day's activities.

Some ideas could be:

  • sending a note home prior to the day to ask your families to send in something to share about their cultural heritage if they would like to
  • encourage family members into your classroom, if appropriate, to share some of their culture or story
  • read books that reflect the diversity of cultures in Australia
  • ask students to draw pictures or write about their family, and staple them together to make a class reading book
  • look at a world map or globe and locate any that have come up in discussion
  • if you are a new teacher, seek advice and support from your colleagues about cultural sensitivity and/or expectations within your school community
  • find activities and resources on the official website

Odd & Even Flower Activities

Do you have our Odd and Even Garden cards? They will help your students demonstrate their knowledge of odd and even numbers. The petals and leaves on each flower help your students visualize the difference between odd and even quantities.

odd and even activity cards
There are 20 cards and students can use these as write and wipe cards or clip cards. Students can circle odd/even with a marker or clip it to show their understanding.

In addition to the activity cards, our pack includes a cut-and-paste worksheet for students to create a little garden of odd and even flowers.

Here on the blog today I want to give you 3 more ways to use the cards. These ideas will help students who need to further consolidate their understanding and link it with other areas in math.

Order and Sequence of Numbers

  • place a flower on your whiteboard
  • draw the flower in a line-up that would become before and after this flower
  • draw the petals and leaves to match
  • what do you notice about the 2 number flowers you drew?
teaching odd and even numbers
  • do this again with numerals only
odd numbers

Build a Flower

  • use popsticks, counters and pom poms to build matching flowers
  • ask students to make sure the number of petals are matched
math center activities
  • ask students to line up the counters in 2 groups so they can see odd numbers cannot be shared evenly into 2 groups

Draw the leaves

  • draw the leaves from the flower on your whiteboard
  • divide your board into 2 parts
  • distribute the leaves between the 2 sides - what do you notice?

Straight and Curved Lines

Did you see our recent post for an art project that encouraged your students to practice handwriting movements and lines to make clouds?

Here are some ideas to extend upon that lesson and revisit the idea of lines in your math program. You will help your students:

  • identify straight and curved lines
  • describe a variety of lines
  • understand that shapes are created with lines
Consider providing opportunities for your students to experience lines in as many different places as possible. It would be wonderful if they could try to describe them in many different situations. The connections they can make between these places and situations will help nurture a deep understanding.
straight and curved lines

Have a talk

Reflect back to your cloud art projects and talk about the different lines shown on your display. Some students may have used multiple line styles in a scribble technique or refined their strokes and used one, like a loopy or wavy line.

Tell students that for math today you want them to start thinking about lines as one of 2 types - curved or straight. Have a discussion about these types of lines in the environment - outside or in the classroom. Show some specific examples. Trace with your finger. Show a printed photo and draw over some objects with a pen to show the lines (edge of table is a straight line, soft edge of toy is a curved line).

Math Talk and Language

Encourage and model the use of informal math language. It does not matter at this stage if students use correct terminology, what matters most is that they understand the concept and can describe it. Here are some words you might use:

straight, wavy, curved, curly, zigzag, thick, thin, short, line, up and down, across, sloping, slanting, between, crossed , broken, crossing, joining, paths, closed, open, inside, outside, forward, backward, left, right, turn

Line Hunt Math Walk and Talk

Take students on a line walk. Stop and identify lines. Lines on buildings, equipment, drains, gutters, paths and in nature - tree branches, leaves and flowers. Compare them. Talk about them. Take photos for reflection back in the classroom. Draw pictures in math journals. Encourage lots of discussion and model for your learners the joy of being curious and discovering detail in our world.

math walk and talk

Partner Play

While outside, let the students play a line game. They will demonstrate their understanding of straight lines by 'walking' in lines in a designated space. Tell them to be creative - long lines, short line, turns, right, left (model positional language). Ask students to work with a friend. One walks a straight line path on the concrete or hard surface. The other student traces the path with sidewalk chalk. Once completed they can stand back and look at the line path created by walking in straight lines. Encourage them to describe it using positional language.

Shape Cards

Our stick shape cards are great to include in a learning center that fosters visual memory, fine motor skills and a focus on using lines and angles to create shapes. Students will be encouraged to use mathematical language as they position each stick to make and modify shapes as they progress from card to cards. They will be able to experience how lines helps us make shapes. Find our shape stick activity cards over on the website.

Line Art Project

Following these experiences you can give your students time to create an artwork with straight lines. Depending on their age and ability to rule lines, you will need to modify this experience. A giant collaborative class art project could be worked on together as you support and scaffold the drawing of lines with the giant classroom ruler.

Teach students to use a 'ruler', holding it in position with one hand and drawing with the other. Use the pop sticks from the shape card activity as a beginning ruler. Demonstrate to students how to draw lines all over page without worrying too much about their position. They can cross, intersect and overlap to create shapes. Students can color or paint sections to show the shapes they created.

Free worksheet

In coloring club today we have provided you with a page for students to experiment with lines. Read the words with them and look for examples of them in your classroom or school. Once this page is completed you may like to include it in your math journals.
