A Simple 2-Minute Quick Start ✏️💛
Hello doodle friends,I know I haven't been popping into your inbox as often this month without a formal drawing challenge, but I wanted to check in, say hello, and encourage you to keep drawing 😊
If your sketchbook has been a little quiet lately, you're not alone. This week I felt like drawing, but I had no particular idea in mind. So I tried this simple exercise, and it worked so well that I thought I'd share it with you.
The start takes just 2 minutes, and the rest of the page can take as long as you'd like.
Try This
- Open a fresh page in your sketchbook.
- Set a timer for 2 minutes.
- Start with a fluency pattern—something you can draw without thinking. For me, that's loops.
- While drawing, think of a color.Mine was yellow.
- Draw the first thing that comes to mind when you think of that color. For me, it was little suns.
- Keep drawing whatever naturally comes next.
- When the timer ends, decide whether you'd like to stop or keep going.
Why It Worked
- There was no pressure to have a good idea.
- The page started moving before I had time to overthink it.
- Familiar shapes and favorite doodles naturally appeared.
- By the end of the 2 minutes, I wanted to keep drawing.
Sometimes that's all a sketchbook page needs to be.
A Little Reminder
If you're feeling stuck, don't wait for the perfect idea.- Start with a line.
- Add a color.
- Follow the next thought.
- You might be surprised where it leads ✏️💛
