Looking for a quick, engaging way to start your math lesson? Go Rocket Go is a fun bonus math rhyme included in Math Kit Bundle 2 that makes the perfect warm-up activity for your small group or mini lesson table!
This simple activity combines movement, language, listening, subitizing, and numeral recognition in a way that young learners love.
How to Play
Start by practicing the Go Rocket Go rhyme together several times. Students quickly learn the words and enjoy joining in as they become familiar with the rhythm and repetition.Next, display number cards 1–6. I like using the sunshine number cards included in the kit, but any set of number cards will work.
Then:
- Roll two dice.
- Ask students to identify the numbers they see.
- Find the matching number cards.
- Repeat for lots of quick practice and fun!
This fast-paced warm-up is a great way to reinforce:
- Listening skills
- Oral language development
- Subitizing
- Numeral identification
- Number recognition
Extend the Learning
Once students are comfortable finding the numbers, challenge them to:- Find the total of the two dice.
- Use a 20-sided or 30-sided die for larger numbers.
- Find the difference between the two numbers.
- Compare numbers and discuss which is greater or less.
These simple extensions make it easy to differentiate and keep the activity fresh throughout the year.
Bring the Rocket Back to Earth
After your warm-up and main lesson, revisit the activity by having students help the rocket return to Earth!Challenge students to place all of the number cards in backward counting order to create a countdown for landing. This provides another meaningful opportunity to practice number sequencing and counting backward in a fun and memorable way.
Go Rocket Go is a quick activity that packs a lot of learning into just a few minutes and is a wonderful addition to your math routine!
