I recently shared an Instagram reel showing how to create a page full of happy clouds and rain using three simple, handwriting-based drawing movements I use all the time: the spiral, the hop, and the downstroke.
How the Drawing Works
This activity is perfect for little hands because it breaks drawing into manageable, repeatable movements:
- Spirals – Students draw a series of small spirals and link them together to form the base of their cloud.
- Hop movement – Then they “hop” around the outside edge of the spirals in a continuous oval shape to group them into one fluffy cloud.
- Downstrokes – Finally, they add short dashed lines underneath to create rain falling between the clouds.
Bring It to Life with Color
Once the drawing is complete, you can add:- Crayon for structure and detail
- Watercolor for a soft, blended finish
Build Skills While They Create
What I love most about this activity is that it’s not just “art time”—it’s also:- Fine motor development
- Handwriting foundation practice
- Movement-based learning
- Morning tubs
- Fine motor rotations
- Writing centers
