Little Lamb Fine Motor Fun: Drawing, Cutting, and Handwriting Ideas for Kindergarten

Happy Monday, teachers!

I hope your week is off to a gentle start. I’m at my desk today thinking about all of you and your busy classrooms, and I wanted to share a few simple ideas you can use right away to support fine motor skills and handwriting practice with your learners.

Turn Scribble Circles into a Playful Lamb

Turn Scribble Circles into a Playful Lamb

I’ve just shared a new drawing reel over on Instagram showing how children can turn their scribble circles into something wonderful — a little lamb ready to play!

It’s a lovely way to transform those early circular scribbles into a recognizable drawing while still keeping the activity relaxed and joyful.

Hop over to Instagram to see the simple step-by-step idea and try it with your learners!

Add Some Scissor Skills with a Lamb Theme

If you’re looking for more fine motor practice this week, scissor skills are always a great choice.

With my Little Lamb Cut & Curl Scissor Skills Pack, children can:
  • Cut along simple lines
  • Roll the paper strips around a pencil
  • Create a curly wool coat for their adorable sheep
They look wonderful if children want to paint or color them — but it’s absolutely not essential. The cutting and rolling practice alone gives excellent fine motor exercise.

A Handwriting Warm-Up: The Dive Pattern

A Handwriting Warm-Up: The Dive Pattern

Here’s a quick fluency pattern you might enjoy using as a handwriting warm-up.

  • Start with a dive pattern along the line:
  • down and up, down and up, down and up.
  • Then vary the rhythm:
  • short dive, long dive, short dive, long dive, short, long, short, long
You can also try:
  • two short dives, one long dive
  • two short dives, one long dive
If your learners are ready, they can turn this pattern into writing practice by forming:
  • the lowercase w
  • or the word wool

You might even play with a little rhythm while writing:

w, w, wool on the l, l, lamb…
sheep, lamb, ram!

Keeping the pen moving helps build fluency and confidence.
