Koala Fun for March: A Directed Drawing & Writing Activity Kids Will Love

There’s something special about taking a quick creative break in the middle of a busy day—and today’s doodle might be my favorite yet! For day 17 of my March doodle challenge, I drew a sweet little koala (you can check it out over on my Instagram!).

It got me thinking… koalas are the perfect inspiration for a simple, engaging classroom activity—especially for preschool, kindergarten, and first grade learners.

That’s exactly why I created this Koala Directed Drawing and Writing Pack—a low-prep activity that builds confidence, creativity, and fine motor skills all at once.

Kindergarten Koala Art in Progress

With just crayons and paper, your students can follow step-by-step directions to draw their very own koala. Directed drawings are such a great way to help young learners feel successful while practicing listening and following directions.

Once their koalas are complete, the learning doesn’t stop there! Students can:

  • Add color using crayons or even paint for extra creativity
  • Practice handwriting and sentence writing
  • Build confidence in expressing their ideas
To bring in a little literacy connection, the pack also includes a simple reading sheet with fun koala facts. It’s perfect for a reading or writing center and helps spark curiosity about these adorable animals.

Did you know?

Koalas sleep up to 18–20 hours a day and eat mostly eucalyptus leaves! These little facts are always a hit with students and make learning feel fun and meaningful.

If you’re looking for an easy, engaging activity that combines art, writing, and a bit of science—this is a great one to try during March (or anytime!).
