Day 2: Striped Giraffe – Silly September Doodle Challenge
Welcome to Day 2 of the September Silly Sketches Doodle Challenge! π¦
Yesterday, our Polka Dot Panda had a party, and today, it’s the Striped Giraffe’s turn to take center stage. This month, we’re exploring one animal + one pattern every day — a playful, quick way to keep your creativity moving while sprinkling a little silliness into your sketchbook.
Why a Giraffe?
Giraffes are such fascinating, graceful animals — and perfect for doodling. Think long neck, wobbly legs, curious eyes, and a gentle smile. When I sat down to doodle my striped giraffe, the silliness quickly took over:
- one giraffe had a fluffy tail balancing an ice cream cone π¦
- another had a bee perched on its nose π
- and a third was picking wildflowers and wattle to celebrate the first week of spring here in Australia πΌπ
Drawing Tips for Your Giraffe
Here are a few ideas to get you started:- Look at real giraffes – Before you start, take a few minutes to study photos of real giraffes. Notice their unique proportions, how their legs bend, and the way their spots (or in our case, stripes!) curve around their body.
- Simplify the shapes – Break the giraffe down into basic forms: Oval for the head, long rectangle for the neck, circles for joints and body, straight or curved lines for those wonderfully wobbly legs
- Add your stripes – Instead of spots, fill your giraffe with bold, silly stripes. They can be perfectly straight or wildly zig-zagged — your choice!
- Bring in your own style – Whether your work is whimsical, abstract, realistic, or graphic, let your drawing reflect you. This challenge is about showing up, not following rules.
