Joyful Learning Through Math, Art & Play!

Hello from My Desk: Whales, Gumballs, Cherry Treats & Butterfly Math

Hello lovely friends,

It’s so nice to be popping in to say a warm hello from my desk to yours. Here’s to hoping your day has included a peaceful pause — perhaps with your favourite drink and a corner of calm to enjoy it in. I know things can get busy, so I wanted to share a few gentle updates in case you’ve missed them over on Instagram, in the newsletter, or if you just like to catch up right here.

Over on Instagram recently, I’ve been sharing a few little drawings that might bring a smile or spark some creative moments for you and the children in your world. One that’s been especially sweet is this simple whale drawing — created with gentle, flowing line movements that can support writing readiness and fine motor skills in a playful, calming way. It’s one of those "draw along together" moments that I think children (and grown-ups!) really enjoy. You can see it here: Whale Drawing

We’re also doodling our way through the June Doodle Challenge, and this week’s prompt brought out a gumball machine! It’s cheerful and whimsical — perfect for the young or the young at heart. Feel free to join in whenever you like, no pressure or perfection required: Gumball Doodle

On the home front, my weekly try-a-new-recipe challenge led me to make cherry bliss bombs on the weekend — sweet, delicate, and just the right amount of nostalgia. I wrapped them up in a little envelope made from baker’s paper and blue craft paper and delivered them to my mum. She’d had a big weekend taking care of lots of lovely people, and I wanted to surprise her with something a little bit special. She told me how she bought a Cherry Ripe after her very first day of work when she started earning her own money — I could just picture her in that moment, proud and independent. Cherry Ripes have held a soft spot ever since. If you’d like to make your own cherry surprise for someone, here’s the little tag I made for the packaging – it might be just the thing for a thoughtful treat. 🍒

And lastly, over in the Math Kit, there are some new butterfly cards fluttering in! One of my favourite quick warm-up games to play with them goes like this:

Butterfly Math Cards in Action

Butterfly Math Cards in Action

Butterfly Threes

  • Roll 3 dice.
  • If 2 of the dice have a difference of 3 (like a 1 and 4, 2 and 5, or 3 and 6), you get a set of 3 counters.

  • The goal is to collect four sets (making 12) and cover them all!

It’s a gentle, strategic way to warm up number thinking and spotting patterns, and it’s been a hit with little learners.

Thanks for letting me pop in — I always love writing these little notes and imagining them landing in your world. If you’ve been drawing, doodling, baking, or math-ing in your own corners lately, I’d love to hear about it!
