Hen’s Math Scramble – A Fun Spring Math Game for Adding 3 Numbers

Looking for a fun way to extend your springtime math craft into hands-on practice? Hen’s Math Scramble is a playful, low-prep follow-up activity that gets your students rolling, adding, thinking strategically—and having loads of fun!

Students playing Hen’s Math Scramble – spring addition game in action

After completing their Hen’s Spring Add-Up craft, set up a large table with paper, a few dice, and invite students to play this group addition game.

How it Works:

  • Each student takes turns rolling 3 dice.
  • They find the total and decide: Do I write it down, or roll again?
  • Students can roll as many times as they like, but they may only record 3 (or 4, your choice) totals on the paper.
  • Once a number is written down, it’s “in the nest” and cannot be changed!
At the end, students circle their biggest total, and the highest number in the group wins the scramble!

Begin with this fun little rhyme:

Math in the nest is so much fun!

This activity encourages mental addition, number strategy, and math talk, all while keeping the springtime learning light, collaborative, and meaningful.
