Use your apple drawing as a springboard for some simple literacy and math fun:- Talk about the letter A/a and the short /a/ sound. Open your mouth wide to say /a/ — just like you’re about to take a big bite of an apple!
- Look closely at the shape of lowercase a — a big round shape with a little stick at the side.
- Make red and green apple patterns with counters during math.
- Brainstorm other words that begin with A. How many can your class discover?
Fill an alphabet learning center with alphabet charts, letter and picture cards, stencils, tactile letters, coloring pages, paper and pencils, or a whiteboard for practicing.
And don’t worry if you haven’t formally introduced every letter yet! Having letters available for children to explore gives curious students a chance to discover them independently during learning centers, spare moments and fast-finisher time.
A little playful exposure and familiarity can help build confidence and give children more background knowledge as you work your way through the alphabet together. 🍎💕
