Bring Sunshine Into Your Classroom with a Sunflower Art & Writing Project
There's something magical about sunflowers.Their bright golden petals, towering stems, and cheerful faces seem to bring sunshine wherever they grow. It's no surprise that children are naturally drawn to them, making sunflowers a wonderful theme for art, science, literacy, and writing activities.
My new Sunflower Directed Drawing & Writing Pack gives students the opportunity to create beautiful sunflower artwork while developing observation skills, fine motor control, confidence, and creativity.
Create a Full Art Experience
While the directed drawing pages work beautifully as a simple classroom activity, they can also be expanded into a memorable art lesson. We recently created our sunflowers on large sheets of art paper using black marker for the drawing details. Once the drawings were complete, students painted them with watercolours using several shades of yellow. We blended touches of orange throughout the petals to create a warm, glowing effect that made each sunflower look like it was beaming sunshine across the room.
The finished artwork was absolutely stunning displayed together as a visual gallery. Every sunflower can be unique while still allowing students to experience success with the guided drawing process.
Build Fine Motor Skills Through Tracing
The pack also includes a detailed tracing page.Tracing provides valuable opportunities for students to strengthen hand control, pencil grip, visual tracking, and fine motor coordination. Because the sunflower design contains a variety of shapes, lines, and details, it offers meaningful practice while still feeling engaging and purposeful.
The tracing page also makes an excellent fast-finisher activity, morning work task, or independent learning option.
Connect Art, Literacy, and Science
One of my favourite ways to use directed drawing activities is by building learning experiences around a common theme.A wonderful companion text for this activity is Sunflower by Eve Bunting. This beautiful story provides opportunities for discussion, vocabulary development, and connections to nature while inspiring students to look more closely at the fascinating sunflower plant.
Students can also investigate:
- How sunflowers grow
- The parts of a sunflower plant
- Why sunflowers follow the sun
- The many tiny flowers that make up a sunflower head
- Animals that benefit from sunflowers
Explore Colour and Creativity
Sunflowers also provide the perfect opportunity to explore colour.Invite students to experiment with different shades of yellow, gold, and orange while discussing how artists use colour to create depth, light, and texture. Students may notice that no two sunflowers in nature are exactly alike, giving them freedom to create artwork that reflects their own observations and artistic choices.
These conversations help children develop both artistic confidence and an appreciation for the beauty found in the natural world.
A Cheerful Classroom Display
One of the best things about sunflower artwork is the atmosphere it creates. The bright colours instantly warm up a classroom and create a welcoming environment for students, families, and visitors. Whether displayed in a hallway, on a bulletin board, or around the classroom, these happy flowers seem to spread joy wherever they are placed.
If your classroom could use a little sunshine, this sunflower project might be just what you're looking for.
Students will enjoy drawing, tracing, painting, writing, and learning about one of nature's most cheerful flowers - and you'll love the beautiful results on display.
