Leaf Match-Up Math Game for Kindergarten - Subitizing and Counting

How to Play: Leaf Match-Up

Objective:
  • Match pairs of leaves with the same number of dots!
  • This activity helps students practice subitizing, recognizing doubles, and working with pairs that add up to 10.
  • It’s perfect for kindergarteners who are just learning to identify numbers quickly and make connections between them.
Getting Started:
  • Prepare your Dot Leaf cards (1–6 dots) and mix them up in a small pile or “leafy forest.”
  • Divide the class into pairs or small groups, or play as a whole group in a circle!

Game Instructions:

  • Draw two leaves: Each student or team takes turns drawing two Dot Leaf cards.
  • Check for a match: If the two cards have the same number of dots, they keep both leaves. If they don’t match, return them to the pile.
  • Collecting matches: Keep going until all the pairs are collected!
  • But here’s where it gets fun…
The Leaf Twist! 🌬️
  • To keep everyone on their toes, we’ve added a little twist:
  • If a student draws two cards that add up to 10 (6&4, 5&5), they have to “sweep away” their collected leaves!
  • Hint: for more add-to-ten options you could change the game rules and have students take 3 cards to add
They place their cards back into the pile and start collecting again. (This gives them a playful lesson on pairs that make 10—without even realizing they’re doing addition!)

Dot Leaf Cards - Fun Counting and Matching Activity for Kids

Math Game for Early Learners - Pairing Dots to Make Ten

Wrap-Up & Learning Review:

  • Once all matches are made, count up each student's or team’s “collected leaves.” Encourage everyone to share which pairs they matched, recognize doubles, or recall which combinations made 10. These little reviews help reinforce subitizing, counting, and early addition concepts while giving kids a chance to celebrate their wins and practice math language.

Learning Skills Highlight:

This game brings a lot of math goodness:
  • Subitizing by recognizing dot patterns at a glance
  • Recognizing doubles when two cards match (like two 3’s or two 4’s)
  • Building to 10 by identifying pairs that add up to 10 (such as 4 and 6)
  • Strategic thinking as they decide which cards to keep, return, or watch out for!
Plus, the sweeping action adds a bit of suspense—keeping it fresh and exciting for every round.

Hope this simple game brings extra excitement to your math warm-ups and that your students love the thrill of spotting their “Leaf Match-Ups.” 🍂 Let me know how your class enjoys this activity, and feel free to share any creative twists you add along the way! Happy counting!
