Writing Numbers 0-9

If you are teaching students to write numerals 0-9 you may like our fun formation poems. They help children remember the order of their pencil strokes with writing. We have an animated video that is free to play on Youtube to show the path of motion too.

Writing poster

Sharing stories and talking often leads to imagination which can lead to drawing and then attempting to record a story! Model this for your students every day.

One simple way is to let students have show and tell, listen carefully to the news or story they share and then after the students have all finished talking, model the writing process.

Talk about one of the students and the news they shared, draw a picture on chart paper and then show your students how to attempt writing! Model the steps you take:
  • thinking about what you will write
  • drawing pictures to show your ideas - adding detail, labels etc
  • talking about your picture
  • deciding on the words to write - for kindergarten, one sentence is enough to start with
  • clapping out the words as you say the decided sentence
  • writing long dashes or squiggles on your paper to match each word of your sentence
  • attacking the sentence one word at a time, stretching it out, isolating the sounds and writing them down in order
  • rereading to check for meaning

You may like this new poster to help guide your students in this process. It is perfect to go with our directed drawing pages

Use this poster to encourage and support your students when they write. Print it at home (on the paper size that fits through your printer) or take to your local print shop or upload to an online printing service for a giant version!

School Coloring Pages

school coloring page

Over in our Pond Coloring Club we have a growing collection of pages for you and your learners to color with a school theme. Please send me your requests if there is a page you would like to see added!

A coloring page on the desk of your students on the first day/weeks of school
  • can give anxious/unsettled students a consistent routine to follow when they enter the classroom - find their desk, sit, work on single page
  • provides an opportunity for students to sit at their desk and complete a task with minimal instructions from you (allowing you to get to support students who need 1:1 support)
  • can be an option - provide blank paper too for students who would prefer to draw
If you are not yet a member of our club, we would love to have you - you can find out all about joining over on the website.

Learning the ow Sound - Cow Town

If you're teaching the ow sound to your little learners we have a fun game you may like! The cows have come to town and your students will read the words they have brought with them!

ow game

There are 24 simple words that contain ow in the game - review them with your students as a whole class activity.
  • Make a quick chart or write them on the board - it is important that your students see you writing each day.
  • Verbalize each word and show them the location of the 'ou' making the ou sound.
Play a whole class game with the cards - lay them out, call a word and have a chosen student find the matching cow. This whole class game will provide for them an experience to reflect back to when they play it as a small group with their peers.

Our Cute Classroom Posters feature big happy images to delight your little learners and welcome them to their learning space. Each poster has a simple, age appropriate positive message to encourage a positive mindset.

You can print a colored version or a blackline version. You can have your students color them with markers, soft pastel, pencil or even watercolors.

Tips for display:

  • display a poster on your electronic board each morning for a positive start without printing
  • challenge students to think and discuss how they can practically apply the core message of each poster - you may need to guide with ideas and examples
