I would love to share three fast-prep games to play to reinforce single digit addition and subtraction facts. After students have become confident with the process of addition with strategies they can begin to use memory to recall answers. Students may reflect back to their counting or number strategies as they are becoming increasingly familiar knowing the answers as facts.
We are using our free addition and subtraction fact posters - available now in our store. They are provided in color and blackline.
We made mini student reference rings by first laminating and then cutting the sections out carefully. We made mini cards.
We punched a hole in the corner or each card and put them on a ring.
We mixed the order of the cards for these games and included both addition and subtraction. Please note that although the focus of these cards are single digit facts, some 2 digit numbers are included in the answers.
Here are a few fast prep games that your students can play, in pairs - perfect for second and third grade review.
They will each need:
- a ring of facts (to share or each)
- a mini whiteboard and pen each
Challenge me
- students flip through the ring of facts and randomly select 8 questions and record them on their board
- swap boards
- race to answer the 8 questions presented by your partner
- swap boards back and check for accuracy
Draw it
- students select a problem and draw a picture to represent it
- share with your partner who determines the fact
- record the fact
True or False
- one student has the ring of facts, the other has the board and pen
- the students with the ring calls a fact (with the true/false answer)
- the student with the board determines if it is a true or false statement and records it accordingly
