Spider Reading Pack

Shared reading is an opportunity to teach your little ones to read but also provide a platform for a range of other learning experiences! We are thrilled to bring you another Reading Pack.

Our Reading Packs enable you to create a shared reading experience and integrate follow-up learning experiences. This pack includes a short rhyming text - Five Spotty Spiders.

You can access several different versions to share with your learners:

  1. printable pages - print the pdf file to staple to make a book
  2. printable student book - print and staple the blackline version
  3. digital - open and click through the MS Powerpoint file on a device or board
  4. animated version (see below) - play the video on a device or board and listen and track the words)

This little number-based story is perfect to integrate with learning the 'take away' strategy in subtraction. The story sees the spiders fall out of the web one at a time until only one is left. Use this text to help teach your students some social skills too about play, having fun and being safe.

In the printable pack, we've included a list of questions that you can use to encourage discussion, comprehension and connection to the text. These are ideal of a second or third read of the text. During the first read, just allow students to listen and join in to the reading.

Comprehension activities after shared reading

Six comprehension activities are also provided. You can do these activities as a whole class, particularly if you project them onto the whiteboard, in guided reading groups or independently when more capable.

An activity is provided to help students develop the strategies of:
  • making connections
  • monitoring
  • predicting
  • questioning
  • summarizing
  • visualizing
  • predicting

One Page Craft

Our One Page Crafts are always a hit, so we've included one for creative fun and fine motor skills. Encourage your learners to role play the text and use their crafts as puppets! A tracing and pinning page are also included - great for fine motor activity bins.

Writing Papers

Encourage your little ones to write their own spider themed story with the included planning and publishing papers.

Free Number Spider Coloring Page

To celebrate our brand new reading pack, we added a Five Spotty SPIders themed coloring page to the club! If you're a member (by the way, it's free) - it is ready and waiting for you!

We hope your little learners love the 10 activities and our original rhyming text. Use some or all, there is enough for a whole week of literacy engagement!
