A fun bonus idea while completing this project is to connect the artwork with a simple handwriting warm-up activity!

The ice cream cone pattern is perfect for practicing left and right diagonal downstrokes — the same movements students use when forming letters such as:

• X
• capital K, W, Y and V
• the “kick” in capital R, Q

Before drawing or painting, students can practice these diagonal lines on mini whiteboards or in their handwriting books. Then encourage them to use the same controlled strokes when creating the crisscross cone pattern on their funny ice cream.
