Rainbow Rocket Art: Crayon + Watercolor Magic

Rainbow Rocket Art: Crayon-Resist Watercolor & Handwriting-Friendly Drawing for Kids

Rainbow Rocket Crayon-Resist Watercolor Art

The Rainbow Rocket has officially taken off—and I’m so excited to share how beautifully this project came together!

I drew the rockets in crayon first, then painted over them with black watercolor, and the results were pure magic. Because the crayon resists the watercolor, the rockets stayed bold and bright while the background turned into a deep, spacey black. 🌌

In the center, I added a moon, and sprinkled in yellow scribbly stars that practically glisten against the dark sky. It’s one of those art moments where you step back and think, wow—kids are going to LOVE this.

Directed Drawing Rockets with Moon & Stars

From Directed Drawing to Open-Ended Art 🎨

Using the step-by-step directions from the Rainbow Rocket Kinder Drawing Pack, I drew multiple rockets, following the same simple process each time—but then made each one a little different. This is one of my favorite things about directed drawing:
  • Kids can easily follow the steps
  • Every rocket still turns out unique
  • It naturally invites creativity and confidence
Students can absolutely recreate this project, or you can let them explore their own variations once they’ve learned the basic shapes.

Fine Motor and Handwriting Warm-Up with Rockets

A Sneaky Handwriting Warm-Up ✏️✨

One of my favorite parts? This drawing also doubles as a handwriting warm-up.

The rocket shapes use a jump up and down pattern that directly connects to letter formation—especially letters with that up-and-over motion:

  • m & n (just like moon 🌙)
  • h, b, r, and so many more

Before writing, students are already practicing the exact motor movements their hands need. It’s art with a purpose—and it feels like play.

I also shared a quick whiteboard version of the Rainbow Rocket over on Instagram, which is perfect if you want to preview how simple and doable this is for kids.
