Fast-Prep Math Warm-Up: Leaf Match Game

Winter is fast approaching in Australia — but as we see Autumn close, a few trees are still dropping their leaves. It’s the perfect season for a cozy, quick, and effective math warm-up!

Let’s learn a low-prep, high-impact warm-up activity that builds number sense and fluency with dot patterns.

What You’ll Need:

5 dice
Leaf cards from the Math Kit Bundle
A bit of table space and a dash of energy

The Goal:

Help students recognize and match dot patterns—both standard (like those on dice) and non-standard (scattered or unfamiliar arrangements). This strengthens their subitizing skills and mental number fluency.

How to Play:

Roll 5 dice – let students roll or do it together as a class.
Flip a stack of leaf cards, one at a time.
Match the number of dots on the card to the numbers on the dice.
If a 6 is rolled, students can combine two leaf cards in sequence (e.g., 2 + 4, 3 + 3).
Encourage students to go as fast as they can—this is a game of sharp eyes and quick minds!
