Hen’s Math Scramble – A Fun Spring Math Game for Adding 3 Numbers

Looking for a fun way to extend your springtime math craft into hands-on practice? Hen’s Math Scramble is a playful, low-prep follow-up activity that gets your students rolling, adding, thinking strategically—and having loads of fun!

Students playing Hen’s Math Scramble – spring addition game in action

After completing their Hen’s Spring Add-Up craft, set up a large table with paper, a few dice, and invite students to play this group addition game.

How it Works:

  • Each student takes turns rolling 3 dice.
  • They find the total and decide: Do I write it down, or roll again?
  • Students can roll as many times as they like, but they may only record 3 (or 4, your choice) totals on the paper.
  • Once a number is written down, it’s “in the nest” and cannot be changed!
At the end, students circle their biggest total, and the highest number in the group wins the scramble!

Dice and feathers ready for adding 3 numbers with the spring hen craft

Begin with this fun little rhyme:

Little eggs hatch, one by one—
Math in the nest is so much fun!

This activity encourages mental addition, number strategy, and math talk, all while keeping the springtime learning light, collaborative, and meaningful.

Butterflies in the Classroom: Meet Glimmerflutter and Blinkerfly from the Pond Coloring Club

This week, the Pond Coloring Club is fluttering with bright new energy — two joyful new coloring pages have landed in the premium club, and they're here to bring smiles, sparkles, and maybe even a little extra motivation to your classroom or cozy corner at home.

Meet Glimmerflutter

Up high in a mist of sparkles and hearts, Glimmerflutter and her twin can be seen twirling gently through the air — soft wings catching the light, bright eyes watching kindly from above.

They're not just fluttering aimlessly — oh no! Glimmerflutter has been invited to fly above your classroom this week, quietly cheering on your students as they try their best, help each other, and create something new.

Imagine Glimmerflutter peeking in during writing time, circle time, or art time, sprinkling encouragement like tiny heart sparkles over hardworking hands.

“Keep going,” she whispers. “I see your effort. You’re doing beautifully.”

This sweet duo is featured on one of the newest coloring pages inside the Pond Coloring Club Premium Library, perfect for a quiet moment of creativity and calm. We'll be adding a special Glimmerflutter Screen Wallpaper to the Pond Update newsletter soon — so teachers can set it as their classroom display for the week!

Say Hello to Blinkerfly

Down in the flower garden, Blinkerfly is adjusting her bright glasses and focusing hard. Her goal this week? Neat, careful writing.

She’s looking closely at every letter, making sure her curves and lines stay right inside the flower garden fences (you know the ones — sky, fence, and grass lines!).

Blinkerfly isn’t rushing. She’s taking her time. She's proud of her loops and tails, and she beams every time a letter nestles perfectly in place.

“Let’s slow down and notice the shapes,” she says. “Our words are growing!”

Your students will love coloring Blinkerfly and imagining how she might flutter by their desks to check in. Maybe she’ll even wink through her glasses when she spots beautifully formed writing!

Coming Soon to Your Inbox…

We’ll be sending a sweet mini Pond Update later this week with:

  • A free Glimmerflutter wallpaper for your classroom screen
  •  printable Butterfly Wand for students to “fly” around the room and spot wonderful work
  • And a gentle reminder to enjoy little moments of color and calm πŸ’•

3 Easy Spring Math Warm-Ups Using Bunny Number Bond Mats (Perfect for Kindergarten & First Grade)

3 Flexible Math Warm-Ups with Bunny Bonds Play Mats
Perfect for Spring, Easter, or Anytime You Want to Hop Into Number Fun!

Spring is such a refreshing time in the classroom—our students are blooming in confidence, and we start to notice all the little ways they’re putting their math learning together. That’s exactly why I love using the Bunny Bonds Play Mats from my Math Kit Bundle 2 during this season.

Bunny Number Bond Mat Spring Math Activity for Kindergarten

These sweet little mats are perfect for teaching number bonds (part-part-whole), but today I’m sharing three simple, flexible ideas that go beyond the basics—so you can use them for warm-ups, quick reviews, or responsive teaching moments at your small group table. Whether you’re working on addition, subitizing, or building early fluency, these ideas will help you adapt the mats to meet the needs you see in your learners.

Part-Part-Whole Bunny Math Game with Dice and Counters

No math kit? No problem. You can still try these ideas with any part-part-whole visual—draw a bunny face on a circle spot on the desk or whiteboard, or reuse a number bond card from your collection. But if you're looking for a ready-to-go, versatile resource with play mats and tools for every season, be sure to check out my Math Kit Bundle 2!

Flexible Math Warm-Up Idea with Bunny Bonds Mat and Cubes

Game 1: Look for Combinations

This game is all about speed, pattern recognition, and fluency—perfect for a short warm-up.

  • Roll three dice and read the numbers aloud.
  • Encourage students to group two numbers that make a friendly fact—like doubles, near doubles, ten friends, or +1/+2.
  • Add the third number last.
Example: Roll 5, 3, and 1. A student might say, “I see 3 and 1 make 4. 4 and 5 makes 9!”

You don’t need to write anything down unless your learners are ready. I find it’s far more valuable for students to get 10 quick turns of play like this than to spend the time recording just two.

Focus on the math talk and pattern spotting. This game builds fluency one roll at a time.

Spring Addition Practice Using Bunny Number Bond Visuals

Game 2: Roll, Add, and Build

This one is ideal for students who are still learning how addition looks with objects.

  • Roll two dice and add them together.
  • Use counters, cubes, or small manipulatives to build a collection that matches the total. Place it right on the bunny's nose.
Example: Roll a 3 and 1. The student adds and builds a group of 4 on the nose.

Let them count the items, touch and move them, and physically see the result of combining. This hands-on version is wonderful for early learners who need concrete experiences before moving into abstract number work.

Encourage students to check their work by re-counting or breaking the group apart again. This helps develop part-part-whole understanding naturally through play.

Small Group Math Game with Bunny Play Mat for K–1 Students

Game 3: Roll and Make

This is a playful way to practice decomposing numbers.

  • Roll a 20-sided die (or pick a target number).
  • Place that number in the bunny's nose—that’s the whole!
  • Use two smaller dice, number cards, or even just mental math to find two numbers that make that total. These go in the bunny’s cheeks (the parts).
Example: If the total is 10, a student might place 6 and 4 as the parts. You can invite them to use cubes, counters, or write the number sentence too—just choose what fits your students best.

Try this:
Some students might enjoy exploring multiple combinations for the same number. How many different ways can we make 10? Let them play and find out!

Why These Work (And Why the Math Kit Helps You Adapt)

These Bunny Bond Mats are more than just cute—they’re a flexible visual tool. And when you keep a little math shelf nearby with dice, cubes, counters, number cards, dry erase markers, and your Math Kit Bundle 2, you’ll always have what you need to support your students in the moment.

When you sit at the small group table and talk through these games, you’ll start noticing where students are stuck, what facts they’re fluent in, and what patterns they’re ready to explore. And the best part? You can adapt instantly—turning a warm-up into a mini-lesson, or a mini-lesson into a game—because the materials are so open-ended.

Try it this Spring!

Whether you're celebrating Easter, learning about pets, or just diving into some spring-themed number fun, the Bunny Bonds Play Mats are a gentle, visual way to bring math stories and number combinations to life.

How to Play: Find the Difference

This game is designed for partners and works well as a math warm-up, mini-lesson, or independent practice.

Materials:

  • One Rainbow Number Grid per pair (from Math Kit Bundle 2)
  • One dice
  • Small counters (such as cubes, buttons, or dry-erase markers if laminated)

How to Play:

  • Roll the dice.
  • Look for two numbers on the grid that have a difference equal to the number rolled.Example: If a student rolls a 3, they might find 15 and 12 on their grid.
  • Cover both numbers with a counter.
  • The next player rolls and finds a matching number pair.
  • Keep rolling and covering until no more options remain.
The game ends when no more valid pairs exist. Students can compare their grids and discuss their strategies!

Spring into Drawing: Easy Daffodil Directed Drawing for Kindergarten!

Spring is a season of fresh beginnings, bright colors, and beautiful blooms—making it the perfect time for a daffodil-directed drawing lesson!

Easy Daffodil Directed Drawing for Kindergarten

If you’re looking for a simple yet creative way to introduce your students to drawing, writing, and seasonal learning, this Easy Daffodil Directed Drawing is just the thing. Available as a printable pack in my TpT store and included in Fun Drawing Bundle 2, this step-by-step drawing makes it easy for young artists to gain confidence, develop fine motor skills, and express themselves creatively.

Why Start with Drawing?

In early childhood classrooms, drawing before writing helps young learners develop their storytelling skills, fine motor control, and confidence with a pencil. By starting with a playful, engaging drawing activity, we set the stage for rich conversations, early writing experiences, and a sense of accomplishment that carries over into literacy learning.

Step-by-Step Daffodil Drawing & Writing Activity

A Fun & Easy Way to Draw a Daffodil!

One of the best things about this directed drawing is that it starts with a simple number 8! From there, a few extra strokes transform it into a beautiful daffodil.

After the basic steps, students are encouraged to add their own creative touches—whether it's a whole field of flowers, a buzzing bee, or a bright blue spring sky.

This balance of structure and creativity makes the activity fun for all learners—even those who are hesitant about drawing.

Simple Addition to 10 with Number Track Play Mats

Moving from Play to Fluency – Simple Addition to 10 with Number Track Play Mats

When young learners are still developing number sense, they need lots of hands-on opportunities to see and experience addition before moving into fluency. Play-based learning helps build confidence and understanding, but how do we bridge the gap between math stories, playful counting, and recall of basic facts?

Hands-on math fun! Build fluency in addition to 10 using Number Track Play Mats for small-group lessons, math warm-ups, & centers.

Here are three simple ways to help students strengthen their fluency with addition to 10 using the Number Track Play Mats.

Act Out the Story with Objects

Many students struggle with abstract addition but thrive when they can see and move objects. Use the play mats with small manipulatives like counters, mini erasers, or animal figures to act out a math problem.
  • Example: “There were 3 frogs sitting on a log. 2 more frogs jumped up! How many are there now?”
  • Have students place 3 counters in the play space, then move 2 more onto the number track to count the total.
This method makes addition tangible and fun, helping children see the process before memorizing facts.

Use the Number Track to Count On

Once students are comfortable acting out problems, encourage them to use the number track to count on instead of recounting everything from 1.
  • Example: Place a counter on 4 and say, “We’re adding 3 more. Instead of starting at 1, let’s count on – 5, 6, 7!”
  • Why it helps: Counting on from a number instead of starting at 1 builds efficiency, helping students transition toward more automatic recall of facts.
From counting to solving! See how Number Track Play Mats help young learners bridge the gap from play-based math to fact fluency.

Fill in Missing Numbers for Fact Fluency

To encourage fact recall, use the play mats with missing number prompts. Place one number card in a blank box and challenge students to fill in the missing parts of the equation using the number track.
  • Example: Place a 5 card in the first blank. Ask, “What number goes with 5 to make 8?”
  • Students can use counters, number cards, or dry-erase markers to explore and fill in the missing number.

Why these cards are ideal for kindergarten:

This method encourages mental math strategies, strengthening fact fluency while still providing visual support.

Making Math Fun, Hands-On, and Effective!

By moving from hands-on play to structured number track activities, students gradually build fluency in addition. These play mats help make the process engaging, interactive, and low-stress—giving children the support they need to grow in confidence and skill.

Want an easy, ready-to-use math tool? Grab the Number Track Play Mats today in my TPT store and start building fluency through play!

With just a few materials, your students will be buzzing with excitement as they work together to grow a beautiful number garden!

Bee Math Warm-Up – Hands-On Addition & Subtraction Game πŸπŸ”’

How to Play

You'll need:
  1. Step 1: Place a bee fact card and a number grid card between two players.
  2. Step 2: One player selects a number from the grid and follows the bee card’s direction (e.g., +5).
  3. Step 3: They say the equation aloud (e.g., "19 + 5 = 24").
  4. Step 4: The other player confirms accuracy—teamwork in action!
  5. Step 5: If correct, the player adds a flower (counter) to the garden.
  6. Step 6: The next player repeats the process with a new number.

Play continues until the whole garden is filled with flowers!

This activity is:
  • Quick & Easy Prep – Just print, grab some counters, and you're set!
  • Collaborative & Engaging – Students take turns, help each other, and build confidence.
  • Fact Fluency Building – A playful way to practice addition and subtraction within 20.
  • An Extension Opportunity – Have students record their math facts on a whiteboard or in their math journal to deepen learning.
Math Fact Fluency Activity – Fun Partner Game with Number Grids πŸŒΌπŸ“Š

Review & Reinforce Learning

After playing, teachers can use one of the worksheets from this Addition to 20 pack (Find it here!) to further support student learning.

This pack has been carefully designed to help students develop mental math strategies, which directly connect to the skills used in the Bee Garden warm-up. If students are relying on counting by ones, using fingers, or needing manipulatives to solve equations, these worksheets provide targeted practice in strategies like counting on, making ten, and recognizing number patterns.

For example, the Bunny Hopping Along the Garden Path worksheet visually reinforces counting on a number line, helping students build a mental number path—a key skill for moving beyond finger counting. By using these worksheets, students can gain confidence and fluency in recognizing and solving number relationships more efficiently.

This math warm-up is a great way to start a lesson, reinforce fact fluency, or simply bring some math joy into your classroom!

    • Tracing Activities: Children can trace bumpy lines to form the top of the lamb's head, refining their pre-writing skills and attention to detail.
    • Cutting Practice: With clear, bold lines guiding them, students practice cutting straight to a designated stopping point, improving scissor control and precision.
    • Curling Fun: After cutting, wrapping the thin paper strips around a pencil creates curly "lamb's wool," adding a tactile and creative dimension to the activity.

    Creative Extensions

    • Artistic Expression: Encourage students to color or paint their lambs, fostering creativity. Displaying their artwork can brighten up the classroom and give children a sense of accomplishment.
    • Writing Integration: Incorporate a writing component by exploring fun facts about lambs. Did you know that sheep have excellent memories and can recognize up to 50 other sheep's faces for years? Or that there are over 1,200 breeds of domestic sheep worldwide? Students can write three interesting facts about lambs, enhancing their research and writing skills.
