To play, start with a chart of words. Maybe you could draw a puppy in the middle.
- students write on a whiteboard as you say the sounds
- ask students to listen as you say some words, segmenting the sounds as fits your learners (e.g. p-u-p)
- students listen and say the whole word back to you (or sound it and say it - you choose)
- select one student to locate the word and circle it on the chart
Extension Ideas
- ask students to put the word in a sentence
- ask students to suggest a rhyming word
- say the first sound or two and then ask students to find a possible match (e.g. say sp-o ... and a student may suggest spot)
- say a sentence with one of the words from the chart missing, and students identify it - e.g. My puppy can .... her tail.
If your students would like to draw their own puppy with a pencil, this page is in the Coloring Club ready for you to print!

They can create a wall of words to match your chart as well with this page from the club. Have them create new, alternative words by adding a sound to each box or they can copy from your chart.

Leave your chart on display. As you read books about pets or puppies, have students listen for words they may remember from your game!
