Subtraction Activity Cards

Do you need a practical way to reinforce the subtraction concept to students? Your little learners may be confident with modelling the process of taking away objects from a group to demonstrate subtraction yet struggling with the leap to mental strategies and written algorithms.

We hear you.

Eat the Apples is a fun and practical math center perfect for reinforcing subtraction as 'taking away' from a group while encouraging a move to a more abstract understanding.

Your students will develop a written subtraction problem from a picture that shows apples being eaten taken away from the group.
  • This printable pdf file will allow you to print and make 194 activity cards! Plenty to provide for all stages of learning in your class.
  • The problems range from 2-1= 1 to 20-19=1
  • You will need to laminate these cards and use them with dry-erase  markers
  • Alternatively, use them as task cards and have students record the problems on paper.

All About Me In Numbers

An 'All About Me' activity is a super fun way to start the school year. They:
  • help students get to know one another
  • help build classroom community
  • help build self awareness which leads to self esteem
  • provide for a familiar topic to explore in the early days at school, when everything can be somewhat overwhelming for our little ones
  • create endless opportunities for rich, meaningful conversation and class dialogue
  • provide for an opportunity for students to try out newly introduced procedures in your class - where to sit, how to work, what equipment to use, listening to instructions

This newly listed resource will help you combine a math lesson (numbers 1 to 10 in our world) with creativity!

The packet will provide you with a poster template for students to complete with facts about themselves with a number twist.

Students will think of a fun fact that relates to them for each number 1 to 10 and record it on their poster. Encourage them to think about their family, hobbies, me-facts, favorite things etc.
Students can color and decorate their poster for display.

Hop over to TpT if you think this is something you would like.

Name Activities for Back to School

Activities for name recognition and awareness are fun for the beginning of the year. For little learners who are growing in self awareness, incorporating name activities will help them become aware of their importance to the class community. They will also become more aware of the special place their peers occupy in the class too.

Today I wanted to remind you of a free resource I shared a few years ago to help you prep an activity for name recognition early in the school year.

Simply copy a page for each student and have them find the letters of their name to color or paint.

Find it in Google Drive HERE

More letter hunt pages

If you think your little learners would like more letter hunt activities through the year, pop over to my TpT store for this printable pack with an alphabet focus.

Addition Game Freebie

I have a roll and color addition activity to share with you today.

How to play this addition game

This addition game is perfect for students to play in pairs.
  • each player has a different colored pencil
  • players take turns to roll 3 dice and find the total
  • encourage your l earners to 'look for a ten' in the three numbers they have rolled if possible
  • encourage other addition strategies - doubles, doubles +1, known facts to help with finding the total
  • players color a square that matches their roll, if available
  • the player who is last to color a square is the winner

When should I use this activity?

This is perfect for students who are confident with the concept of addition (combining two groups or growing a group). These students can 'count on' (they naturally count from the larger number when finding the total) and are beginning to build a memory of addition facts and mental strategies.
Use it in math centers, small group rotations or for fast finishers.

Where can I find this printable addition activity?

You can find it right here on our blog - download it from Google Drive, HERE

Thank you so much for stopping by today, we are so happy to have you here!
