I am wondering why the blends only get one box, when they make 2 separate sounds? {cl= /c/ and /l/, etc.}

I teach my initial and final consonant blends (2 letter and 3 letter) as separate sounds - and taking a separate part or "chunk" in the word. Although I emphasise to students that we can "hear" both sounds when we say the blend, they are so close together that they can also be heard as a separate sound. In this way, my students can attend to words, identify elements and decode patterns with speed and automation. These care allow for students to learn that the two letters go together to make one "chunk" of the word. I hope this makes sense :)
